[Infographic] Indian Skilled Workforce Numbers

Understanding the Numbers

Note – For brevity, we only created this info graphic for engineers but it can be applicable to any other field too.

Every year in India, 550,000 students graduate from various Indian engineering colleges and Universities (excluding diploma holders) and every year, about 50+ thousand of them get placed in Infosys, Wipro, TCS, iGate/Patni, IBM, Accenture and about two dozen such companies (the split between tech and non tech hires is not publicly available, also the number of people joining these companies every year is more than this 50k but many of them are not freshers too. This 50k also includes top MNCs like Google/Microsoft/Amazon/Adobe (they do hire lot of non-tech people too which we are ignoring here)

About 10 to 20 thousand goes abroad (old stats but looks correct) and assuming about 30k-50k joining other smaller software, IT, BPO and KPO companies, there are still 350,000+ fresh engineering graduates (about 70%) who don’t get job after finishing their graduation. 30% of engineering graduates don’t get any job even after one year too.

These numbers are just for freshers and every year the number of (semi) skilled engineering graduates in India is getting increased by 350,000 and if we put Diploma holders and other non engineering numbers, the number gets into 1+ Million. Most of them look to get into non-tech jobs and start working for companies like Airtel/Reliance or get into Finance/Banking sector or if they are in Tier II cities, they look to have some small job or have their own venture like opening coaching class. There are lot of girls as well who after marriage move to different cities and leave their jobs.

So what is the Point of this infographic ?
India has Millions of skilled people, may be semi-polished, may be not fully trained but there is no question about it that the people are there as well as the potential and what they need is a platform like WorkMonk under which they can work from their homes.
